Time Cards
fall 2008 | postcards | 4.5" x 6" each

In Time Cards, I chose the postcard form because it has an established universal meaning as a medium to connect people across distance, and usually sent from a place of leisure. I wanted to take the essence of “Wish You Were Here” and turn the focus to a moment in time vs. place. I selected images which suggest “anyplace,” and recorded the precise mechanical time of day as the sole description, with a two-fold aim: to remove the emphasis from the location, and to play with the notion of “taking time off.”

These postcards are an attempt to capture “time” as a one would normally capture “place,” using a medium which is also reserved for such communication. It is an attempt to distill the questions of “who/what/where/when/why” to just the “when”—when do we think of our loved ones who are not with us at that moment in time? Time Cards seeks to capture the experience of a beach visit as a series of moments, and removing specific information about the location. Each postcard is identified only with the time of day. This project is the result of my desire to stop, capture, reflect upon, and share a moment of experience. Perhaps it is an impossible endeavor, but by calling attention to the intention it creates an encounter for the recipient—a moment of reflection.
